The Inverted Triangle Road Sign in Bulgaria: What Every Foreigner Needs to Know
If you're a foreigner learning to drive in Bulgaria, you must recognize one road sign from day one: the inverted triangle. It may look simple, but it carries a critical meaning in Bulgarian traffic law and appears frequently—especially at junctions.
What Is the Inverted Triangle Road Sign?
In Bulgaria, the inverted triangle is the official “Yield” sign. It’s also unique—it’s the only road sign with an inverted triangle shape, making it instantly recognizable among all other traffic signs.
Its message is clear: “Give priority to the vehicles on the priority road.”
You’ll encounter this sign most commonly at junctions where two or more roads intersect, and it tells you that you do NOT have the right of way. Instead, you must slow down, assess the traffic, and only proceed when it's safe.
Why It’s So Important for Foreign Drivers
Understanding this sign is essential not just for passing your Bulgarian theory exam, but for your safety on the road. In fact, during lessons at our school, we place special emphasis on priority road signs—because they’re some of the most misunderstood, especially for new arrivals.
If you’re unfamiliar with the priority system in Bulgaria, it’s easy to assume you have the right of way, when in fact the inverted triangle is telling you to yield.
How to React When You See It
Slow down immediately.
Look left and right—vehicles on the crossroad may not be stopping.
Give way to ALL traffic on the priority road.
Only proceed when it’s safe, even if no vehicles are coming.
It’s also important to note: if there’s a yellow diamond sign facing the other drivers, they’re on the priority road—and you must let them pass.
